NSS Unit

Through NSS unit our students have developed a passion to serve for the society. A weeklong NSS camp is organized every year by adopting a village near the campus and conduct medical / eye camp, veterinary camp, cleaning the village, etc.

The NSS unit of Mailam Engineerng College, in association with Anna University, Chennai had organized a 7-Day camp at the village Kanniyam which is located in Villupuram District. The camp was inaugurated on 17th March 2016 and was wounded up on 23rd March 2016. The underlined motto of the weeklong camp was “Healthy Youth For Healthy India”.

On 17th March, 2016, the Inaugural function was held at 10.30 am in a grand manner. It began with the prayer followed by the Welcome Address given by Dr. S. Senthil, the Principal of Mailam Engineering College. Shri. M. Dhanasekaran, Chairman &Managing Director of MEC presided over the function. Shri. S.V. Sugumaran, the Vice Chairman of MEC and Dr. K. Narayanasamy, the Secretary of MEC felicitated the Inaugural function. The president of Kanniyam Village Panchayat Shri. S. Nandha Gopal and the Vice president Shri A. Baskar were present on that auspicious occasion and addressed the gathering. All the members of the Panchayat had made their presence. Mr .M. Balamurugan, NSS Program Officer, proposed Vote of Thanks.

To create a lifelong memory and to promote a green serene environment, the volunteers planted a lot of saplings of various kinds like Almond, Neem, Banyan and Babul all along the road side which connects the village Kanniam to the National Highway. NSS volunteers worked tirelessly and enthusiastically in digging pits for the plantation. The local youths too, on their own accord, came forward to assist our volunteers. Shri. N.M. Devaraj, Founder, Asian Water and Environment Development Organization, Villupuram had been invited as the guest of honur. He, in his address, stressed the need for preserving water for future and also insisted the need for Clean and Green environment. After the program, the volunteers planted a lot of herbal plants inside the college campus. In the afternoon, at 3.00 pm. Dr. Senthil, the Principal of Mailam Engineering College gave a lecture on “Human Resources and Rural Development”.

On 18th March 2016, all through the forenoon, to protect the saplings from cattle, the volunteers put fencing. On the same day, in the afternoon, a seminar had been organized. Shri. M.K.C. Rajendiran, Organizer, Association for Cultural Awareness, Villupuram, delivered a lecture on “ Pudhu Yugam Paddaipom, Ini Oru Ulagum Seivom”. It was very informative and brought a positive change in the attitude of the students.

On 19th March, 2016, the volunteers went on uprooting the bushes which had grown all along the roadside. They also cleaned the walls of public buildings like school, temple and other govt. buildings which had been covered with unwanted notices. Knowing the importance of practicing yoga for people, particularly for students, a program on “Manavala kalai Yoga” had been arranged. ” It was presented by R. Asaithambi, president, Tindivanam Manavalakalai Trust, Tindivanam. All the volunteers and the students of nearby schools attended the practice session. The program received a good feedback from the students who attended the program. It helped to them to be relived themselves from all sorts of stress and strain.

On 20th March, 2016, Sports and Games were conducted for the school students. Many students enthusiastically took part in the events and won prizes. Those sports and games helped them to rejuvenate their energy. Thiru. K. Vel Murugan, Physical Director, Mailam Engineering College conducted all those events.

Organization was present on the occasion and addressed the people

On 21st March, 2016, a program was held on “Organic Farming”. Shri. M. Ramamurthy, Secretary, Asia Water Resources and Environment Development Organization was present on the occasion and addressed the people. He, in his address, spoke in detail, the various reasons for the degradation in farming. After the program, the volunteers met the local villagers at their fields itself and told them the adverse effects of using fertilizers and pesticides in their fields. They were advised to use manure instead of fertilizers. It brought a significant awareness among the villagers.

On 22nd March, 2016, a Veterinary Camp was held. The people of surrounding villages were informed of the camp by issuing pamphlets by the volunteers a day before the camp. There was an overwhelming response from the side of the villagers. Since the cattle population is more in this vicinity, a lot of cattle had been brought for various treatments. A team of medical personnel headed by Shri. K. Magendiran, B.V.sc Deputy Director, Veterinary Department, Tindivanam had come for this purpose. As many as fifty cattle were given proper treatments and the cattle owners were given away some useful tips by the team of doctors with regards to the care that should be taken for their cattle.

On 23rd March, 2016, in the morning, “Computer Training” was given by Mr. P. Saravanan, Asst. Prof. Dept. of IT/MEC to the school students and another program on “Enhancement of Teaching –Learning Process” was given by Shri . G. Annamalai, AEEO, (Retired),Villupuram. The program helped the students to augment their skill of learning.

Yoga

Yoga and Meditation Programme were organized for the school children and NSS volunteers . Mr. T. Satheeshkumar explained the importance of Yoga, and how to practice it. The NSS volunteers learnt KAAYAKALPA Yoga which is very helpful for enhancing their power of concentration.

To create a life long memory and to promote a green serene environment, 1000 saplings of almond, neem, banyan, babul, laurel were planted in the College Campus, Government Primary School, streets of Mailam village and around the water bodies. NSS Volunteers worked tirelessly and enthusiastically in digging pits for the plantation. Mr. Shyam, Founder of Shyam Trust had been invited as a Chief Guest. The trust had donated 1000 saplings. The Planting of Saplings was done all around the village Mailam.

SHRAMDAAN – Campaign Cleanliness on Gandhi Jayanti at Mailam Railway Station

In order to promote clear and hygienic living conditions, the Southern Railway organized a special cleanliness drive in Mailam Railway Station. Our college students Shri. H. Abdul Ajees II Yr B.E. Mechanical Engg and Shri. A. Asokkumar of II Yr Mechanical Engg, participated in the camp. The event was organized by SWACHH nd BHARAT MISSION on 2 Oct 2014, on the eve of Gandhi Jayanthi Diwas

Road Safety

Programe : In order to create awareness about road accidents, the Road Safety Program was organized by RTO (Regional Transport Office) Tindivanam. A rally was held to create awareness with regards to safety for the college students. From MEC, 100 students participated in the rally. The program was inaugurated by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tindivanam.

MEC’s NSS Team along with Kandamangalam and Mailam Blood Bank team organized a Blood Donation th Camp at the college premises on 26 Feb 2015. Shri M. Dhanasekaran, Chairman and Managing D i rec tor, M E C inaugurated the func tion. Shri. S.V. Sugumaran, Vice Chairman, felicitated the Blood Donors. Dr. S. Senthil, Principal, MEC, Dr. R. Rajappan, Dean, welcomed the participants. A team of medical personnel from PHC, Mailam and Dr. Tamilmani from PHC, Tindivanam, participated in the programme.There was an overwhelming response from the students. As many as 90 students donated their life saving fluid-blood.
